13 months in Korea today, and 1 month left. I’m getting really excited to start traveling again as it appears that I’ve nearly reached my expiration date in this country. Truthfully, that may have happened a long time ago!
I’m kind of disappointed that I’ve finally gotten accustomed to the ways of Korea and now it’s time to leave and go somewhere that I’m sure things will be equally as strange as, if not stranger than, Korea. I’m looking forward to Thailand, although there is no definite travel plan and merely a very basic route we’ve agreed to take. We’ll spend a bit of time in Southern Thailand upon arrival, then cross into Cambodia, cross into Vietnam and travel up the Eastern coast, then spend some time in Laos before heading back into Thailand for one final lap around.
I’ll give everyone contact details during the month of September.
YIKES.
PS: I am about 90% sure Mary and I are going to Jeju-do, an island off the coast of South Korea, for Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving). It’s meant to be comparable to the Mediterranean. We’re going to leave September 19th and come back on the 23rd! Check out the link above to see what it’s like!
I went to Beijing, China. 2+ months ago. I waited too long. Again.
The entire trip was a whirlwind of constant excitement and bewilderment. We arrived at the airport and managed to make our way into the city via express train. Once there, the subway was the first issue which automatically brought new meaning to the expression ‘jam packed’. I felt like the jolly green giant jammed into a can of Chinese sardines.
We found our hotel, checked in, and went out wandering to adjust to the new, but temporary, surroundings. Then, this happened: http://china-travel.suite101.com/article.cfm/beijing-tea-scam-targets-foriegn-travelers It cost us $450 CAD and I was extremely unhappy for a period of time.
Day 1: After a good nights sleep, Steven and I woke up and headed for Tiananmen Square, The Forbidden City, and The Temple of Heaven. It was bloody hot, and we walked for almost 12 hours that day. Worth every step! All the attractions we saw that day we phenomenal.. mind blowing even. Please check out the photos on my Facebook profile! Later in the evening, we stumbled upon Wanfunjing Market where we snacked on scorpion and starfish, while drinking Chinese Tsingtao with the beer Gods.
Day 2: THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA. Wow. After nearly missing out due to the massive lineups, we arrived at the Badaling section of the Great Wall and spent nearly 5 hours hiking up, down, and around the snaking wall. I couldn’t believe my eyes. After arriving back in Beijing, our friend Abby came from Tianjin, a city nearby, and took us out for authentic Beijing Peking Duck. WOW. AGAIN. We continued on to Workers Stadium, and then on to a number of ritzy nightclubs in another district of Beijing (Bobomee and Babyface) and had a relaxing evening of clubbing, electronic music, and bottle service.
Day 3: Hangover. Chinese hotpot for lunch- confusing for the palate. Then we went off to see Summers Palace and the 2008 Summer Olympic Site, and sadly had to say our goodbyes to Abby who showed us an AMAZING time.
I know I didn’t do the trip written justice but I promise to go into more detail when I see you all in the New Year!
